Super Bowl Sunday

I woke up this morning and told Kyle that if the pastor of the church we went to did not mention the Super Bowl in his message that it was a sign that that was the church we were to stay at until we one day move away from Phoenix (at this point in our church hunting I think we had yet to find a church where the pastor did not relate the Bible in someway to sports - something which i don't much like). We finally went to the church that my grandparents recommended to us months ago - that being a little church on the ASU campus called Praxis Church. We both really enjoyed it and were probably the only couple there who were out of college, though we both agreed that we should probably still be in school ourselves - being all of 21 and 22. The pastor was in the last chapter of Joshua and said he wished he had a whole congragation of Caleb's because then everyone would be a 90 year old man who wanted to punch people in the face - or something like that. The pastor is pretty young, and considering this I think it is pretty amazing that he did not make reference to the Super Bowl - he was however full of funny little puns. For example: he said that the word "therefore" in scripture is said after the writer gives you a little history of why you are suppose to do what he is about to say and that you should "there for" go back and read that part again and pay attention.



1And Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

3And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.
4And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.
5I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.
6And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea; and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto the Red sea.
7And when they cried unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.
8And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
9Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and warred against Israel, and sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you:
10But I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.
11And you went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand.
12And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy bow.
13And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.


14Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD.
15And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.



The main jist of this guys sermon was that as Christians we usually do what is right because we hope that people will notice this and see Jesus in us. We show up to work on time and leave on time because this is what Jesus would do - or we don't steal a staple from work because Jesus wouldn't do that "he'd just *poof*(stretch out his hand) and a staple would be there." He said that most Christians have taken on a Saint Francis outlook on evangelism- "go out and preach the gospel, and if you have to, us words" he said he didn't think that Jesus was a follower or Saint Francis - that he deffinately used words and was not afraid of them. So instead of just not worrying about anything and saying that I know everything will always be alright at work, I need to start saying "Do you know why I don't worry? and do you know why I belive that everything will always be all right. And do you know why I act the way I do - it's because of Jesus." People can't see a person in me that they don't know, (the only Jesus they know is a swear word) instead they just look at me and think that I'm crazy.

So church was good, and I am really glad that we went. I felt like I actually learned something, I wasn't bored and best of all I feel like I've found a church that I wouldn't be ashamed/embarresed of taking a non-believer to.

In other news - We found out a few minutes before the super bowl was aird that we did not have the station that it was going to be played on - so we went and saw "There Will Be Blood" instead. It got excellent reviews but was slightly dissapointing - the point of the film rather escaped us. Anyway it was nice - we were the only people in the entire film - and didn't have to whisper - or get upset that other people were talking, which is exactly what were were doing.
